SDSU Tutor Values Statement
At the SDSU Writing Center, we value the shared learning experience between tutors and students working as peers. We value that we help students to better understand their own writing processes and to gain confidence in their writing abilities as they work to ensure their writing is effective for varying purposes and situations. We also value the center as a creative, supportive, and friendly place for students of all backgrounds to work and learn.
Amaya
Hi everyone! My name is Amaya, and I’m a graduate student in the MCJC program at SDSU. I earned my criminology degree (with minors in sociology and political science) from Penn State and am excited to be back in sunny California! Alongside tutoring at the Writing Center, I’m involved in research on the lived experiences of incarcerated Indigenous Americans, and I also coach volleyball. Outside of school, I love reading, writing, going to the beach, and spending time with friends and family. I’m really excited to work with everyone this semester!

Hello! My name is Ayla and I am an undergraduate student at SDSU. I am majoring in Psychology with an emphasis in Neuroscience and minoring in Child Development. I am currently a research assistant for the Body Image, Sexuality, and Health Laboratory and I plan on going into the research field after I graduate. I was raised but not born (Philippines) here in San Diego and can speak Tagalog fluently. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me, I am especially strong in narrative and analytical writing. Besides writing I love reading. My all time favorite book is The Secret History by Donna Tarte. Please feel free to recommend books to me during our sessions!

Hey! My name is Camille, and I am currently majoring in English and Comparative Literature, with plans to minor in film. I was born and raised in San Diego, so I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to attend SDSU. I’m confident that my talents lie in the realms of art and literature, so I hope to one day pursue my dream of becoming a screenwriter and director. My hobbies include sewing, cooking, hiking, listening to new music, and writing (obviously)! I'm looking forward to working with you and hope to help you find your voice within your writing. 🙂

Hi everyone! My name is Catelyn, and I am a student here at SDSU. I am from the Bay Area, California, and I am majoring in International Business with an emphasis in Spanish Studies in Europe. I speak both English and Spanish, and after graduation, I hope to use my Spanish skills to work abroad in either Spain or Latin America! Writing has always been a passion of mine, and my skills are particularly strong in analytical or informational essay writing, although I do enjoy narrative style work as well! Outside of academics, I enjoy doing outdoor activities like hiking or beach trips. I look forward to working with you in the future. 🙂

Hi! My name is Chloe, I am a Psychology major with a minor in Interdisciplinary Studies through the Weber Honors College, and I am also pursuing a certificate in Creative Editing and Publishing. I am originally from Arizona, although I was born in France. My first language is French, and I also speak some Spanish. I love reading and writing; it helps me relax and de-stress when I have a lot going on, and I also love helping others with their writing. Other than that, I love watching shows/movies, eating good food, and listening to music/going to concerts. I also play beach volleyball, and I am on the SDSU club beach team. I'm excited to meet you and help you achieve your writing goals!

Hi there! My name is Dianna (I also go by Dee!) and my pronouns are she/they. I'm a Creative Writing MFA student pursuing a concentration in fiction. While going to grad school, I also teach RWS 100 and 200 as a Teaching Associate. Outside of SDSU, you may have seen me vending at zine festivals around town. Zine-making is a medium I love that has allowed me to publish my own creative projects so I may connect with artists, readers, and writers in our community. All of this is to say, I am building a life that revolves around writing in all of its forms. My writing journey started in the 2nd grade when my teacher Mrs. Gutierrez taught me that everyone has a story to tell no matter their age or background. I apply this mindset to the work I do as an educator and a tutor, believing strongly that everyone has something to say and they have the right to build the skills to communicate in ways that are true to them. My goal is to change peoples' relationships to writing, even if just a little bit. I look forward to working with you!

Hello! My name is Elena, and I am currently completing my undergrad as a Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences major with a minor in Child Development here at SDSU. My main academic interests include psychology, linguistics, and creative writing! A big goal of mine is to learn as many languages as I can- I currently know English, Spanish, Portuguese, and a little French and ASL. In addition to my love for writing, I enjoy playing soccer, going out with my friends, and having fun beach days. I'm looking forward to meeting and working with you!

Hello! My name is Emilia (they/them) and I am a journalism major with an emphasis in public relations. Learning the relationship between celebrities, their brands, and the public is super interesting, so that's what I hope to do in the future. I am from Los Angeles, and I live near the beach. Some of my interests include listening to One Direction, trying new pasta, and coaching track and field when I go back to my hometown. Writing has always been a big part of me, back when I was writing cringey stories in middle school. I totally understand how hard it is to write and articulate thoughts onto paper, so I'm here for you!

Hello!! My name is Izzy, and I'm an undergrad student majoring in International Business in Spanish and Latin America. I'm also a board member of an a cappella group here at SDSU called Sirens of State! (Feel free to check us out!) Some interests of mine include musical theatre, singing, reading, and writing. I also really enjoy playing the ukulele and guitar, as well as crocheting. (There is definitely room for improvement, but I still enjoy those activities nonetheless.) English is my first language, but I know a bit of Spanish. With that said, I hope to see you here in the Writing Center soon!

Hello there! My name is Jacob, and I am a graduate student in the History department. I'm a San Diego native, who got his Associates at San Diego Miramar College, and his BA at UC Berkeley, both in history. Academically, I'm interested in 18th and 19th century intellectual world history, and have limited literacy in Spanish. Outside of school I enjoy going to the gym, playing video games, and deck-building for Magic: The Gathering. Aside from my main interests, I am mostly knowledgeable in most things pop culture and history, so, I hope to see you at the center soon!

Hello! I'm Jaylynn, and I am double majoring in journalism and religious studies, with double minors in history and television, film and new media. With these disciplines, I do a lot of writing, and I love doing it and sharing it with others! I highly enjoy working with friends and peers on projects to help produce an outcome that the both of us feel proud of. Hopefully, one day, this application gets me to the Oscars in some capacity, but fingers-crossed that it's being on stage and accepting an award. In my free time, I can probably be found at the movie theaters, doing improvisational theatre or spending too much money on a concert. I can't wait to exercise the muscle of writing with you sometime!

Hi, my name is Liv, and I am an English major with a minor in marketing. I am originally from San Francisco, and some of my favorite activities to do while I am in the city include trying new cafés, wandering around all of the different districts, and attending Outside Lands Music Festival annually. Some of my other hobbies include collecting vinyl, cycling, painting, going to concerts, and, of course, writing. More specifically, I love to journal and write poetry. Hello everyone! My name is Madi Saylor, and I am part of the MFA program for Creative Writing here at SDSU. Before starting this program, I spent four years at SDSU working towards my B.A. in English and French, and in this time, my love for reading and writing only grew. I love all types of writing, but I will be pursuing fiction and writing my first novel as a part of the graduate program. Aside from my academic and literary pursuits, I am a huge fan of crime and medical TV shows such as Criminal Minds, Chicago Med, and 9-1-1. I also have a little cat called Frank, and I love to show people pictures of him, so if you are ever interested, I would be happy to show him off. I am so grateful to join the SDSU Writing Center as a tutor and to be able to share with other students my passion for writing and language. I look forward to working with you all!

Hi all! My name is Marc and I'm a graduate student in the RWS program here at SDSU, but my undergrad was in TV/Film Production at CSULA. I grew up liking writing, but never really gave myself the time to read or write until I learned how much it can benefit you at a human level. You truly learn so much about yourself from writing, and as long as you're putting in work to explore yourself through text, you will be a better person when it's all done! That's the energy I bring to my tutoring session's regardless of whatever you need help on, but I do specialize in research papers, rhetorical analysis, and anything pertaining to the arts. I enjoy hiking, art, and do fire and LED flow arts (poi/dragonstaff) in my spare time. Looking forward to working with you all!

Hi! You can call me Marine, I’m working on a Master’s in Rhetoric & Writing Studies here at SDSU. My dream career is to work as a developmental or line editor, so I’m super interested in going over fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and all kinds of creative writing. As a tutor/writing mentor, my primary goal is to work with writers to bring their authentic ideas, arguments, and intentions to life. In my free time, I love to read and watch anything Star Trek, play video games, and perform spoken media-analysis essays to an audience of myself and my friends only.

I am originally from the Bay Area and transferred to SDSU in 2024 to complete my Undergraduate degree in English and Comparative Literature. It is my goal to become a Professor in Rhetoric and Writing Studies one day, and working as a tutor at SDSU has allowed me to gain one-on-one experience guiding students through their writing processes. Hi! My name is Sophia and I am an undergraduate student here at SDSU! I am from Southern Orange County and am studying English with a minor in Political Science. Writing has always been something that I have enjoyed, because it allows me to have a creative outlet that has very few limitations (outside of academia). I am super passionate about the legal field, and hope that my studies here at SDSU will equip me with the tools to excel in my postgrad life. Outside of school, I really enjoy physical activity, whether that be going to the gym, walking, hiking, etc. I also love music and will spend ridiculous amounts of money on festivals and concerts. I am so excited to meet you all in the future and help you to become stronger, more confident writers.

Hi! My name is Tait. I’m a Rhetoric and Writing and Political Science major with experience writing across many different fields, particularly in research and food studies. I have also worked as an undergraduate researcher with GenAI, focusing on Large Language Models such as ChatGPT, CoPilot, and DeepSeek. Currently I lead two research projects on GenAI and its effects on student voices in grammar correction and data collection. Outside of school, I have a strong interest in food. For a short time, I even considered minoring in food studies. I’ve worked in restaurants since high school and both love (and sometimes hate) everything about the industry. As a tutor, I enjoy working with students at any stage of the writing process and helping them develop the tools to better understand and engage with writing. I especially value creating space for debate and critical discussion as part of the learning process.

Hey there, my name is Zoe and I hope we get to meet at the Writing Center! I am working on a Master's in English & Comparative Literature and I'm stoked to join a group of awesome tutors. I received my BA in English at Cal Poly SLO, where I spent a lot of time reading and writing--of course-- as well as surfing, listening to music, and thrifting. In school, I enjoy writing poetry, researching teaching theory, and reading research papers on methods of analysis. Schedule a meeting with me, if you need writing support!
